PASTURED BROILERS

We just picked up a batch of 70 Cornish Cross meat birds that we will be raising for the next 7ish weeks on pasture. The chicks start out in a brooder for 3 weeks where they are under a heat lamp and on deep wood chip bedding. At 4 weeks they are moved into “chicken tractors” which are mobile units that we move by hand each day so that the chickens have access to fresh pasture and are moved away from their previous day’s manure. This not only produces healthier, happier chickens, but it also helps to fertilize the land. There’s a visible difference in the amount of grass regrowth in an area that a chicken tractor has been.

Why Pasture Raised Chickens?

We may be biased, but our meat birds are the best tasting chicken we have ever had. In our opinion, there’s no comparison between pasture-raised poultry and chicken you get at the store. We also love knowing that our chickens were given the best possible lives during their time with us. No confinement housing, no living in dirty conditions, no antibiotics or de-beaking, just chickens living on pasture the way they were designed to live. Not to mention, when they are processed, the meat is cooled off in ice water, not buckets of chlorine and fecal matter and they are frozen immediately instead of being pumped full of preservatives and fillers. We truly feel that chickens raised this way are the healthiest and most nutrient-dense option out there. While there are “organic” or “free-range” meat options in the big name stores, we always encourage folks to buy from their local farmers who they know and trust because a lot of the grocery store brands use green-washing techniques to make their product sound healthier and more ethical when in reality, they aren’t being completely transparent on how their animals are raised and processed. We have learned so much since looking more into factory farming practices vs. regenerative farming and one of our goals is to share this information with those around us, as we wish we knew a lot of this sooner.

Processing and Pricing

Just like with our pigs, we believe that every animal deserves not only a good life, but a good ending. Our broiler chickens are raised on pasture from the time they are a few weeks old, where they have access to sunshine, fresh grass, insects, and clean air. They’re moved daily to fresh pasture, which keeps them healthy and gives them the most natural life possible.

Processing day is done on-farm, reducing stress and ensuring their final moments are handled with the same care as the rest of their lives. Because they are processed here at home, they never have to endure the stress of transport or unfamiliar environments.

Our birds average 4.5 to 5.5 pounds dressed (finished weight), and we sell them whole, frozen, and vacuum-sealed—perfect for your freezer at $6/lb. When ordered in bulk (20 birds or more), the price is reduced to $5.50/lb. Each bird takes up about 0.25 cubic feet of space, so a dozen broilers will need roughly 3 cubic feet.

We raise just a few batches each season, and demand tends to outpace supply. If you’d like to reserve your whole, pasture-raised chicken for our August harvest, follow the link below to place your order.

**A deposit of $5 per bird is required with each order. Balance is due upon pick up at the farm.
